COUNSELOR

The alphabet soup that is placed in front of a parent of a student in special education can be daunting. Terms like FAPE, IEP, IEE, IDEA, FAA, ABA, PBIP, are thrown at Parents as if they should have a working knowledge of them. We work with clients to explain the basics and intricacies of special education from initial assessment through dispute resolution. We can help you decipher whether your school has met its obligations to your child and to decide the next steps. We can also provide referrals to trusted and independent professionals who can give you a second or third opinion about your school’s assessments of your child and/or its recommended placement for your child.

The IEP process can be truly nerve-racking for parents, who often find themselves at a table surrounded by a dozen people who seem to think they know their child better than the parent does. We can attend your IEP team meeting with you in order to ensure that your voice is heard and that your school is following proper procedures in developing the IEP. We can advocate for the specific services and accommodations needed for your child to access their education.

When the IEP process has not produced the results you were hoping for, we can provide representation before the California Office of Administrative Hearings, Special Education Division. With a wealth of experience utilizing the procedures set forth in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (“IDEA”), we can stand with you through all stages of special education litigation from dispute resolution through the administrative hearing. We also provide representation in appeals of due process actions, whether or not we represented you at the administrative level. We also handle actions arising under the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the United States Constitution.
