Brian Sciacca's first experience with special education came over 25 years ago when he served as a paraprofessional in a high school classroom for students with disabilities. In that role he worked with students with learning disabilities in the development of their reading and organizational skills and collaborated with general education teachers in the implementation of students' individualized education programs. His first lesson in disability rights law came when he was tasked with literally carrying a student who utilized a wheelchair up and down stairs in between classes as the school retrofitted its campus to become compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Prior to entering law school at the University of Southern California, Brian continued working with children as a high school water polo and swimming coach at Laguna Beach High School, a junior lifeguard instructor with the city of Huntington Beach, and later, an after school program director at the Santa Barbara Family YMCA. During his second year of Law School, he took a course in a Special Education and Disability Law and also earned a position as a law clerk with the Los Angeles Unified School District's office of general counsel, special education division, where he was saw first hand the machinations of the second largest school district in the nation.
Following graduation, Brian spent four years at one of the largest education law firms in California, representing public school districts in special education matters. During this time, he acquired a wealth of experience in due process hearings and special education mediation and a wealth of knowledge about the inner workings of public school districts that serve him well in his current role.
Since 2009, Brian has been a counselor, advocate, and litigator serving children with Disabilities and their families. First, he cofounded Champlin and Sciacca, LLP, with his partner Robin. Next, he launched his own practice, where he continues to practice before the California Office of Administrative Hearings, Special Education Division, the United States District Courts, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
When not at work, Brian most enjoys time with his wife of twenty years and his teenage daughter, especially nature-centered trips in their vintage travel trailer.
